WHAT IS PREVIOUS PLACENTA?

Knowing that you are pregnant is one of the blessings that many women yearns to have, that is why at this stage of your life requires a lot of care on your part within which is that you attend to register for your prenatal control and that you take exams of check

Ultrasound as such, has a great relevance in all the trimesters of your pregnancy because in each one of them you will see changes and at the same time monitoring the growth of your baby.

Within the first 12 weeks will be to see that your pregnancy is forming within the uterus, know exactly how many weeks you have pregnancy and see if there is or not of hemorrhages.

After 12 weeks we will verify the growth of your baby and at the same time something very important that leads us to talk about this topic, we will visualize the position of your placenta.

In pregnancy, the placenta moves as the uterus stretches and grows. At the beginning it is very common for the placenta to be in the lower part of the uterus, but as the pregnancy progresses, the placenta moves towards the upper part of the uterus. By the third trimester, the placenta should be near the top of the uterus, so that the cervix is clear for delivery

Sometimes, the placenta partially or completely covers the cervix. This is called placenta previa and there are different forms of placenta previa:

  • Marginal: the placenta is on one side of the cervix, but it does not cover the opening.
  • Partial: the placenta covers part of the cervical opening.
  • Complete: the placenta covers the entire cervical opening

The patients who are most at risk of suffering from it are the following:

– Older pregnant women

– Smokers

– Those with an abnormally formed uterus

– Many previous pregnancies

– Multiple pregnancies like twins, triplets.

-Internal scarring of the uterus due to a history of surgery, cesarean or curettage

It is not that this is a genetic disease or that if in your previous pregnancy it happened to you now the same thing can happen to you again, no.

Placenta previa is a cause of hemorrhage in pregnancy that can have a fatal outcome causing worldwide one of the main causes of maternal death and / or fetal deaths and we will only know what to determine with ultrasound, there we determine its location, which if it was previous or partial or complete your gynecologist will know to give you the recommendations and signs of alarm why to consult emergency, because if you present transvaginal bleeding is mild or abundant without abdominal pain you should go to your nearest center since it is necessary to assess whether You deserve to be admitted or just give you recommendations like the following:

  • reduce physical activities
  • save bed rest
  • not have sex,
  • do not use tampons or douching

But if the bleeding does not stop, it may increase and put your life and that of your baby at risk, if you happen to have bleeding and if it is in weeks from 20 to 36 of your pregnancy, risks are often weighed where it is It is necessary to perform an emergency cesarean section even if your baby is premature because if the bleeding does not stop with medication, hydration and rest, it can be fatal if the pregnancy continues.

But if it is more than 36 weeks and the position of your placenta persists, either partial or complete, you must have a C-section before you reach 40 weeks to avoid risks and complications.

That’s why ultrasound is important to determine that your placenta is growing in a good position and avoid fatal consequences because you will take more care of yourself and abide by your doctor’s recommendations if your diagnosis was placenta previa.
